Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with problem gambling among school and out-of-school adolescents who experienced betting games. For the purpose, based on the ecological health promotion model, this study conducted secondary data analyses by utilizing the raw data of the 2018 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems. The analytic samples of this study were 5,080 school and 510 out-of-school adolescents, respectively, who experienced betting games during the last three months before participating in the survey, and the Gambling Problems Severity Scale was used to measure the level of problem gambling. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, 22.3% of school adolescents and 50.4% of out-of-school adolescents experienced at-risk or problem gambling. Second, factors associated with the level of problem gambling differed between school and out-of-school adolescents. Factors associated with levels of problem gambling consistently for both school and out-of-school adolescents were gender, whether to live with parents, average amounts of allowance, levels of family communication, whether to live in a neighborhood with gamblers, and whether to receive education to prevent gambling problems.
However, whereas whether to live in a neighborhood with gambling places and levels of perceiving gambling problems were associated with levels of problem gambling for school adolescents, the type of supporting institutions was associated with levels of problem gambling for out-of-school adolescents. Based on the findings, this study discussed practice and policy strategies to deal with and prevent problem gambling among adolescents.
